Jags fall to Lady Titans for District 30-4A crown
Floresville senior guard Destiny Amaro goes up for the ball during the Jaguars’ Feb. 3 loss to Victoria East.
FLORESVILLE -- In the most anticipated rematch of the season, the Floresville Jaguars hosted the Victoria East Lady Titans last Friday night. The two teams battled it out through regulation and into overtime, but in the end, the Lady Titans returned to Victoria with an 87-80 win, and the district title.
Floresville started the game well with a 3-pointer from Destiny Amaro and a pair of free throws from Brittany Aikens. Shelby Leinneweber got in on the action and the Jags held a 7-0 advantage. East began to fight back from there, however, and the teams soon found themselves tied at 9-9. Liesel Raabe and Erica Hernandez each scored baskets in the first, but Victoria East closed out the period with a 9-point run and led 20-14 after the first eight minutes.
Amanda Montoya started the second stanza with a shot from beyond the 3-point arc, and Aikens sank a free throw to bring the Jags back to within 2. East slowly worked its way back out, though, and the lead was back to 9 at 30-21. The Lady Titans led by as many as 15 in the period, but Floresville closed out the half with an 8-point run, making the score 42-35 at the break.
Victoria East began the second half with a 6-point run, but Hernandez broke the streak with a pair of buckets, one from 3-point land. Aikens dropped in a pair of free throws, Hernandez drilled another 3, and Leinneweber scored to make it a 52-47 game at the end of the third period.
DeHavalan Watts scored Floresville’s first basket of the fourth period, and Amaro drained a 3-pointer in the early going. The play went back and forth, and Floresville slowly began to make up ground. With the score at 60-58 in favor of the Lady Titans, Leinneweber dropped in a basket to tie the game at 60-all. Hernandez sank another big 3-pointer for the Jags, and Floresville took its first lead since the first period.
As time ran down, the play went back and forth. Floresville found ways to pull ahead, and Victoria East found ways to tie it back up. The Jags led by 2 points with 13 seconds to play in the game, but the Lady Titans found a way to score, and send the game into overtime.
The overtime period began with the teams tied at 70-70. Victoria East hit a 3-pointer, and then dropped in a pair of baskets to make it a 77-70 lead. Aikens sank a pair of free throws, and East responded with a pair of its own. Amaro, Hernandez, and Aikens all went on to score additional points in the overtime period, but the Jags were unable to keep pace with the Lady Titans, and fell by the final score of 87-80.
Since East had won the first matchup between the two games, they will lay sole ownership to the District 30-4A title. Floresville is soundly in second place, and both teams will easily advance to the playoffs. If both teams continue to win as expected, they will meet again en route to the Region IV title.
