FLORESVILLE -- After losing by a single point the first time they met this season, the varsity Tiger basketball team flipped things around on Victoria East last Friday, and sent the Titans home with a 1-point loss in overtime, 57-56.

There was a lot of offense during the first period of play, as the Tigers dropped in 17 points. The Titans tried to keep pace, but trailed Floresville 17-11 when the first stanza was complete.

During the second period, things were as even as they could be. While Floresville’s points production fell to 13, Victoria East improved slightly over its first-period effort with 13 points of its own. Still, the Tigers held a small advantage at the break and walked into the locker room with the score 30-24.

Floresville came out strong in the third period of play and once again outscored the Titans. The Tigers dropped in 15 third-period points, while simultaneously holding Victoria East to 10 points. Things were looking good for the home team as Floresville led 45-34 with just eight minutes to play in the game.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, the proverbial wheels fell off in the final period, as Floresville went cold, scoring just 6 points in the period. Things got a whole lot better for the Titans, though, as they thundered back into the game with 17 points, tying the game at 51-all when the final buzzer sounded.

The teams moved into overtime, and the scoring remained tight. The Titans found themselves up by a basket at 56-55, but Jaron Medina launched one from beyond the 3-point arc, helping the Tigers to a thrilling 57-56 victory.

Medina led the Tigers in scoring with 15 points on the night, while three additional teammates also scored in double figures. Darren Orth scored 13 points for Floresville, Charlie Albert scored 12, and Mason Ray dropped in 11 points. Estevan Mendiola also got in on the scoring with 6 points of his own.

With three games remaining on their district schedule, the Tigers still find themselves in the hunt for a playoff spot. Floresville was scheduled to face Port Lavaca Feb. 7, will play Gregory-Portland on Friday, Feb. 10, and will close out the regular season on Valentine’s Day Tuesday, Feb. 14.
