Coleman to play for Air Force Academy
East Central seniors (from left) Braedon Robinson, Nick Coleman, and Kyle Padalecki celebrate after signing their national letters of intent Feb. 1. Robinson will play football for Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Coleman will play football at the U.S. Air Force Academy, and Padalecki will compete in the pole vault for Texas Tech University.
With the stroke of a pen, East Central defensive back Nick Coleman made one of the biggest decisions and commitments of his life.
Last Wednesday, Feb. 1, was national signing day. Many of the country’s top athletic recruits were busy inking deals with colleges and universities from coast to coast. Nick was among them, though his commitment was a little bigger, as he signed with the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Nick, a 5-foot, 11-inch, 180-pound senior, played at the cornerback and safety positions for East Central. He has a great deal of speed, and strength to go along with it. Nick is a three-year varsity football player, and started for the Hornets for two years. He received all-district and all-area honors during both his junior and senior seasons. In addition to his prowess on the gridiron, Nick is also a four-year varsity track member, and helped the Hornets to the state championship last spring.
When it comes to taking care of business, Nick does just as well in the classroom as he does on the field and the track. He is an honor student, member of the National Honor Society, and has taken a full load of advanced placement classes. He has also received all-district academic honors every year.
Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Robert Walker described him as a “great kid.”
“He was instrumental in our success in football and track over the past two years,” Walker said. “He is a very good leader and just a quality person all in all. He will be very successful at the Air Force Academy.”
Nick was unavailable for comment following his signing, but what he has done during his four years at East Central speaks volumes. It is clear that a young man with his intelligence and athletic abilities will succeed at the next level, as a member of the U.S. Air Force, and in whatever else he undertakes in life.
