SA Ranch Gelding Stakes, Sale returns to South Texas

The South Texas ranching industry will once again be home to one of the nation’s premier working ranch horse shows and auctions, the San Antonio Ranch Gelding Stakes and Sale. The event will be held Sunday, Feb. 19, in conjunction with the 63rd annual San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo.

The Ranch Gelding Stakes and Sale is both a judged competition and auction of working ranch horses. This year’s event will see 68 horses consigned by owners from eight states. Judged competition begins at 7 a.m. in the climate-controlled Horse Exposition Center located on the grounds of the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. A champion working horse will be chosen from this judged event, along with eight top-ranking horses. Awards include $11,400 in cash and prizes to owners of the top eight horses.

Following the judging, the auction begins and will include all 68 horses entered in the event, including the champion and top placing eight horses.

The Ranch Gelding Stakes and Sale contributes to the scholarship fund of the San Antonio Livestock Exposition Inc. (S.A.L.E.). As of 2011, the S.A.L.E. has committed $113 million to education, with $9 million committed in 2011 in the form of scholarships, grants, endowments, auctions, a calf scramble program, and show premiums paid to the youth.

The management firm of Segraves and Associates, a 35-year-old equine management and consulting company specializing in the production of events such as the Ranch Gelding Stakes and Sale, manages the event in conjunction with the San Antonio Livestock Exposition.
