SAN ANTONIO -- The 49th annual Bexar County Livestock Show concluded on Dec. 30, at the San Antonio Livestock Show Grounds, with East Central FFA members leading the auction number of participants with 104 entries. Competing for countywide honors were groups from East Central, O’Connor, James Madison, Judson, Southside, Southwest, Somerset, Highlands, Burbank, and Bexar County 4-H Club. Of the approximately 1,200 entries, only 339 of these entries made the auction.

The show kicked off with the breeding heifer show Dec. 28. Lexie Ricks took home top honors with grand champion breeding heifer. For a more complete listing of East Central members’ placings, see Bexar County partial results, page 2D.

Jordan Hevner and Kylie Patterson were selected as champion senior- and junior-breeding showmen, respectively.

The cattle show continued with the market steer division, with Kylie Patterson earning the top honors by showing the grand champion steer. In all, the East Central FFA placed 11 steers in the auction.

Katie Kempen earned the champion junior steer showmanship award.

East Central exhibitors claimed three reserve champion honors in the poultry division, Johnna Pieniazek, Kolton Dieckow, and Olivia Gutierrez.

East Central FFA members placed nine turkey hens and five turkey toms. In the broilers show, nine members placed cockerels and nine members placed pullets.

In the breeding swine show, Tyler Baird’s champion Yorkshire gilt went on to win grand champion honors.

In the market swine show, East Central FFA members placed a total of 58 market swine.

In the breeding goat show, East Central swept the show with grand champion honors going to Braden McGhee with her champion fullblood. Amy Beth Moran won one champion honor, two reserve champion honors, and showman honors in the breeding goat show.

In the market goat show, Kaitlin Pollok and Max Thames had division champions. Overall, in the market goat show, FFA members placed 18 goats, while in the market lamb show, eight members had sheep that placed.

The rabbit show concluded the show Dec. 29. More than 120 pens of markets rabbits competed. Ten pens of rabbits made the auction and Chloe Villareal received senior rabbit showmanship honors.

The ag mechanics projects drew lots of attention Dec. 30. The grand champion of the show was the team of Hunter Shadrock and Russell Brown, who fabricated a three--point scissor hay spear. The ag mechanics projects earned six class ribbons for their efforts.

During the livestock judging contest held Dec. 30, 13 students from the East Central FFA made the award platform.

Before the Jan. 7 Bexar County Junior Livestock Auction, four East Central FFA members were awarded academic scholarships, including:

•Kaitlin Pollok -- the Adam Segura Memorial Scholarship.

•Amber Kerns and Christi Schick -- the Silver Eagle Scholarship sponsored by Budweiser.

•Kyle Brown -- a Bexar County Junior Livestock Show Scholarship.

Each of these young people has had an active FFA career and will have an exciting colligate future.

“We are extremely proud of our students’ accomplishments,” Ray Pieniazek said. “The livestock show is one of the areas in which students can participate in the FFA. Students at East Central FFA are encouraged to participate in all avenues of the FFA, from leadership, judging, community service, and raising livestock projects. We would like to thank everyone that showed up to the auction on January 7 and supported our students.”

For more information regarding the East Central FFA or to support the program, contact the ag office at 210-581-1185.
