LA VERNIA -- Police continue their investigation into a crash two miles north of here Feb. 8 at approximately 2:30 p.m., that injured a horse involved in a trail ride.

Chief Bruce Ritchey of the La Vernia Police Department said members of the Mesquite Traildrivers had just left the H-E-B supermarket on U.S. 87 and were headed northbound on the highway on their annual trek to the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. A northbound Honda passenger car, driven by an alleged distracted driver, struck the right rear of a Bexar County Pct. 4 constable’s Chevrolet Tahoe being used to escort the riders.

The impact caused the sport-utility vehicle to swerve left and strike a horse, causing both the animal and its rider to fall. Ritchey said the rider refused transport by the La Vernia Emergency Medical Services but the horse, which suffered a 3- to 4-inch laceration, was taken to the County Line Animal Hospital in Adkins for treatment.

No further information was available as of 5 p.m.

Due to the increase of population especially due to the oil companies moving in, there are more and more accidents happening and we act shocked that something happened to a Trailer Rider and Horse. Prayers to the rider and horse.
