LA VERNIA -- The La Vernia community is mourning the loss of a 16-year-old high school junior, who died Feb. 10 after being struck by a vehicle on F.M. 1346.

Trooper Harold Estep of the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol assisted fellow Trooper Anthony Flores at the crash scene. Estep confirmed that Linda Vela, a student at La Vernia High School, was pronounced dead at the scene after being hit by a 2002 Ford Crown Victoria driven by 33-year-old Gregory Ro-driguez.

Estep said Vela and her brother were walking toward the intersection of C.R. 357, possibly to wait for a school bus. The preliminary investigation reveals that the two walked into the travel lane to avoid a puddle before Rodriguez’s vehicle -- which troopers believe was traveling at the posted speed of 55 mph -- struck Linda. Her brother was unharmed, Estep said. The driver, upon realizing what occurred, stopped to render aid.

Superintendent Tom Harvey of the La Vernia Independent School District said Linda was a beloved student, who also was a dedicated member of the high school’s band. Counselors are on hand to assist grieving students.

“Our staff and students are extremely saddened by her death and touched by her loss,” Harvey said.
