GONZALES -- The La Vernia Lady Bear junior varsity basketball team traveled to Gonzales Feb. 7 to play its final game of the season.

Both teams started off slow with the score 4-1 in favor of La Vernia at the end of the first period. Both teams picked it up in the second, adding 7 and 6 points, respectively, to their scores. At the half, the score was 11-7 in favor of the Lady Bears.

Gonzales went on a run in the third period, adding 12 points to its score, while the Lady Bears only added 2 points. The Lady Apaches took the lead at the end of the third, 19-15.

The Lady Bears had to make a push in the fourth if they wanted to get a win for their last game, and that is exactly what happened. The Lady Bears outscored Gonzales 11-2 in the fourth to take a 1-point victory, 24-23.

Hallie Pace was the team’s high scorer with 6 points, followed by Reagan Roswell with 5. Courtney Shussler and Tori Broll each added 4, while Jordan Bailey scored 3 points. Shelby Ellis added 2 for the Lady Bears.

The La Vernia Lady Bears finished their season with a 7-3 district record and a 16-7 overall record.

“We have had a great season and I couldn’t be more proud of the girls,” Coach Mandie West said. “Our three district losses came by a total of 6 points, and two of those were overtime games. We grew as a team and showed signs of improvement throughout the entire year.”
