Stockdale pumped for powerlifting
STOCKDALE -- It may have been the first time Stockdale ever hosted a powerlifting meet, but the event went well, and the hometown lifters made a strong showing. In addition to Stockdale, several athletes from Poth and Nixon-Smiley also showed up for a day of competition.
In total, nine different schools were on hand to compete in the event. In addition to the above-mentioned schools, Poteet, Karnes City, Kenedy, Yorktown, Yoakum, and Center Point all made the trip to Stockdale. In the end, Karnes City captured first-place honors in the boys team competition, and Poth took home the top prize in the girls team competition. The boys from Nixon-Smiley finished second in the team standings, and the girls from Center Point grabbed second-place team honors.
Poth’s Jessica Coronado was named as the outstanding lightweight girl lifter of the meet, and Darion McMahan of Stockdale won the same honor for the guys. Lifters from Karnes City and Yoakum were named as the outstanding heavyweight lifters of the meet.
For Stockdale, the Brahmas picked up several medals during the meet. McMahan led the way with his first-place finish in the 132-pound class, lifting a total of 1,245 pounds. The powerful junior bench pressed well more than twice his own body weight at 300 pounds, had a dead lift of 470 pounds, and managed a squat of 475.
Teammate Matt Valadez also grabbed gold for Stockdale, winning the 148-pound class with a total lift of 1,160 pounds. Valadez had a bench press of 250 pounds, turned in a squat of 440 pounds, and pulled up a dead lift of 470 pounds.
John Dugi and Perry Bone earned a pair of bronze medals for Stockdale in their weight classes, as Dugi looked good in the 132-pound class, and Bone excelled in the 165-pound class. Dugi had a bench press of 215, a squat of 325, and a dead lift of 390 pounds. Bone powered up 225 on the bench, 340 in the squat rack, and 350 in the deadlift.
Conner McLaughlin finished fifth in his weight class with a total of 870 pounds, Christian Rodriguez was sixth in his class with 995 pounds, and Cody Kotara lifted a total of 700 pounds.
In girls competition, Lacey Dugi won gold in the 114-pound class with her total lift of 520 pounds. She had a bench press of 80 pounds, a squat of 205, and a dead lift of 235 pounds. Kristen Moore won silver with her total of 560 pounds, lifting 100 on the bench, 195 in the squat rack, and 250 pounds in the dead lift.
Kyndall Davis and Brittany Martinez picked up third- and fourth-place finishes in their weight classes, lifting totals of 515 and 560 pounds, respectively. Davis had a bench press of 100 pounds, a squat of 195, and a dead lift of 220 pounds. Martinez had the best Stockdale bench press of 105, lifted 185 in the squat, and had an impressive dead lift of 270 pounds.
The Poth powerlifting team was also on hand, and the Pirettes were very impressive en route to their team championship.
All eight Pirettes who competed in the meet earned a medal. Erin Chacon finished fifth in her weight class, and Amber Rangel was fourth in hers. Kayla Feliciano had a strong performance to finish second in the 148-pound class, falling only to her teammate and winner, Daniella Noguez.
The remaining five lifters for Poth all earned gold medals, including Kadalina Escobedo, Yarisa Ramon, Jessica Coronado, Noguez, and Marisol Palacios. For the second time in as many meets, Coronado also won the outstanding lifter award. She lifted a total of 710 pounds, managing a bench press of 135 pounds, a dead lift of 275 pounds, and a squat of 300 pounds.
Poth senior Chase Wiatrek made a strong comeback from a knee injury to lead the Pirates with an impressive first-place finish in his weight class. He lifted a total of 1,195 pounds, earning a bench press of 305 pounds, a squat of 440, and a dead lift of 450 pounds.
Sophomore Kolby Janek earned a silver medal and had a very strong showing in his weight class, setting personal records in each category en route to a 1,235-pound total. Janek had a bench press of 320 pounds, a squat of 450, and a dead lift of 465 pounds.
Other Pirates participating in the meet included David Delacruz and Justin Fish. Delacruz finished eighth in his weight class, and set new personal bests in each lift. It was the first meet for Fish, and Poth Head Coach Tim Bordovsky said the youngster learned some valuable lessons about the sport.
Unfortunately, results from the Nixon-Smiley lifters were unavailable at time of press. The Mustangs are to be congratulated, however, on their second-place team finish.
All of the teams will continue to compete as they build momentum toward the regional meets. From there, many hope to compete against the best the state has to offer.
