FLORESVILLE -- Two changes are in store for team ropers who compete in the annual South Central Texas Independent Cattlemen’s Association (SCTICA) Benefit Team Roping event. First, the Buck Taylor Benefit Team Ropin’ event, usually held in late July, is set for Saturday, April 28. Also, the event will return to the Stockdale rodeo arena located off S.H. 123 in Stockdale, after being held last year in the Chesnutt Arena in Kenedy. This has prompted the quarterly meeting, held in Atascosa County, to be held in July instead of April.
Chapter treasurer Larry Wiley made this announcement during the first SCTICA business meeting of the year, held Jan. 19 in the American Legion Hall in Floresville.
Other business for the evening included the election of directors. Re-elected to serve another three-year term each were A.L. “Windy” Miller and Gus Gonzales, both representing Atascosa County; and Marshall Livingston and Richard L. “Dickie” Jackson, both representing Wilson County.
Completing the board of directors are Gary and Kristie West, Laurie Miller, Susan Gonzales, and Jim Marsh, all of Atascosa County; and Alton and Pat Kuykendall, Brad Cotton, Larry Wiley, Keith Lubianski, and Bryan Mills, all of Wilson County. The South Central chapter comprises cattlemen from Atascosa, Bexar, Karnes, and Wilson counties.
Outgoing chapter Vice President Jackson, who served on the nominating committee, also announced the slate of officers.
Re-elected for another term were President Brad Cotton, Secretary Susan Gonzales, and Treasurer Larry Wiley. Elected as vice president was Gus Gonzales.
Laurie Miller will serve as reporter for the organization.
During the meeting, two speakers addressed the cattlemen -- Windy Miller, who serves as first vice president of the Independent Cattlemen’s Association of Texas (ICA), and ICA Executive Director W.V. “Bill” Hyman.
Miller recognized the Wilson County News for an article regarding issues affecting the ag industry last year -- “Leaving 2011 in the dust,” Jan. 11. He spoke briefly of one issue, country-of-origin labeling and the World Trade Organization’s ruling against the United States.
He also referred to the article, “Cattlemen continue to ‘ride into the wind,’” Jan. 18, regarding the partnership between western songwriter/singer Brenn Hill and the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association. Hill partnered with the association, with proceeds from holiday sales helping fund activities of the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association.
On a local level, Miller reminded cattlemen of the upcoming “All Breeds Bull and Heifer Sale,” set for Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 10 a.m. during the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo.
In closing, Miller highlighted efforts of two SCTICA members who were involved with an “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” project in Wilson County. Les and Lyle Miller, the sons of Windy and Laurie Miller, volunteered to help build a home for U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Shilo Harris and his family.
The topics presented by Hyman will be addressed in a coming issue of the Wilson County News.
