John Martin among top 15 UIL sponsors in state
Stockdale Independent School District (ISD) board of trustees President Sal Urrabazo (left) congratulates John Martin, recipient of the 2011 University Interscholastic League Sponsor Excellence Award, during the Feb. 13 board meeting. Joining them is Stockdale High School Principal Sandra Lynn, who nominated Martin for the honor.
STOCKDALE -- Recognition by one’s peers is among the greatest honors one can bestow on another, and two teachers in the Stockdale Independent School District (ISD) have received such recognition.
During the Feb. 13 Stockdale ISD board of trustees meeting, Stockdale High School teacher and UIL Academic Coordinator John Martin was recognized as one of the 15 top UIL sponsors in Texas. As the recipient of the UIL Excellence Award, Martin will receive $1,000 and a trophy from the University Interscholastic League, trustees heard.
According to the UIL website, Martin has served 10 years as UIL academic coordinator at the school. He has served as coach for computer science, number sense, and computer applications. A student or team under Martin’s coaching has advanced to the UIL state meet for 12 of the past 13 years, and brought home two state championships.
According to Stockdale ISD Superintendent Paul
Darilek on Feb. 15, Stockdale High School Principal Sandra Lynn nominated Martin for this honor.
This wasn’t the only honor trustees discussed. A group of citizens asked the board to recognize the contributions of Stockdale Coach Lester Jackson by naming the tennis courts for him. These are currently under construction on the Salter property, across from the football field. Paublina Marquez presented a letter of support signed by a number of citizens, asking to bestow this honor on Jackson.
The board is seeking direction from the Texas Association of School Boards for regulations regarding the naming of buildings/projects after a person.
While the trustees took no action on this matter, they did vote on matters discussed in closed session.
After reconvening into regular session, the trustees approved a one-year extension each for high school Principal Sandra Lynn, junior high Principal Sharon Dunn, elementary Principal Lee Dockery, Athletic Director Josh West, Programs and Testing Coordinator Roxanne Seidel, Technology Director Billy Polasek, and Business Manager Becky Stewart.
The trustees also approved the order for elections to be held Saturday, May 12, in conjunction with the Stockdale city elections. Trustee terms expiring include Barry Osborne II for Place 3 and Pat Donsbach, Place 4.
