SINTON -- After winning their district and enjoying a first-round bye in the playoffs, the Poth Pirettes played their first playoff game of the 2011-12 season last Friday night, pounding the Bishop Lady Badgers 95-56 for the area championship.

As the game began in the first quarter, it looked as though the contest would be close. The teams matched baskets, and the pace of the game was blistering. When the first-quarter clock expired, it was a 2-point game at 23-21 in favor of the Pirettes.

Things took a dramatic turn in the second period, however, and the game was all but over at the half. While the Pirettes continued to score baskets at will, dropping in another 29 in the second, the Poth defense tightened its reins, and held the Lady Badgers to just 5 points. As the teams headed for the locker rooms, the score was 52-26 in favor of the Pirettes.

The onslaught by Poth continued into the third quarter, as the Pirettes followed up their second-quarter effort with an equal number of points in the third. While Poth tacked on 29 additional points, Bishop tripled its previous effort to score 15, but still trailed Poth 81-41.

The Lady Badgers managed to outscore the Pirettes in the fourth quarter, but it was of little consequence, as Poth rolled over Bishop for a 39-point win by the score of 95-56.

Justine Quintanilla led all scorers with 20 points in the game, followed by Micah Weaver with 16 points, and Jennifer Kruse with 13. Jordan Kotara scored 12 for Poth, Annika Eckel was good for 9 points, and Claire Raabe scored 8. Tara Broyles, Kelli Kolodziej, Danielle Felux, Amanda Wauters, and Shelby Yanta also scored points for Poth.

With the win, the Pirettes not only claimed the area championship, but also earned the right to play in the regional quarterfinals. The Pirettes were set to face the Lady Eagles of Luling on Feb. 21 in La Vernia. Results were unavailable as of press time, but can be found at www.wilsoncountynews.com.
