FLORESVILLE -- Following a pair of wins over Edison and Tuloso-Midway, the Floresville Jaguar Hoop Troop has earned a trip to the regional quarterfinals.
After a strong season in which the team finished second in District 30-4A, Floresville opened up its 2012 playoff run with a bi-district game against San Antonio Edison. The Bears put up little fight against the Jags, though, and Floresville rolled to an easy 83-37 win.
The game started with a 3-pointer by senior guard Erica Hernandez, and fellow seniors Destiny Amaro, Amanda Montoya, and Brittany Aikens got in on the scoring to help put the Jags up 16-3 early on. Junior Felisha Fraga also got in on the first-quarter scoring, and Floresville led 23-8 after eight minutes.
The lopsided affair continued throughout the second quarter as Montoya, Aikens, and Hernandez continued to light up the board. With Floresville up by 20, Hernandez hit a milestone as she drilled her 100th 3-pointer of the season to make it 38-15. At the half, the score was 45-22 in favor of the Jaguars.
The game was completely put away by Floresville in the third period. The Jags dropped in 25 more points, while holding Edison to just 4. Things didn’t change much in the fourth, as Floresville opened the quarter with a 13-point run, and closed out the game with an 83-37 win.
The victory advanced the Jaguars to the area championship, where they squared off with Corpus Christi Tuloso-Midway. Tuloso scored the first point of the game, but Aikens responded with a 3-pointer, and Montoya followed up with a pair of free throws. DeHavalan Watts spent a little time at the charity stripe as well, and Floresville led 7-1 early on. Things settled out a bit from there, and Tuloso began to find its groove. The first quarter ended with the score 15-8 in favor of Floresville.
Tuloso-Midway fired back in the second quarter, though, and the teams soon found themselves tied at 21-all. Tuloso began to pull ahead of Floresville from there, and led 28-23 as the teams headed into the locker rooms.
The Jags came out strong in the third quarter, and pulled back to within a point. Amaro drained one from beyond the arc, and Floresville retook the lead at 32-30. The Jags stayed a step ahead from there, and led 44-40 by the end of the third stanza.
Tuloso scored first to start the fourth quarter, but Aikens went on a 6-point run to make the score 50-42. Tuloso came back, but Floresville found ways to break the momentum. Leading by three points, Hernandez and Watts found the bottom of the basket several times, and the Jags pulled well in front for good. When time finally expired in the close game, it was Floresville advancing with a 64-56 win.
The Jaguars moved on to the regional quarterfinals, where they were set to square off with Corpus Christi Moody. The game was held Feb. 21 in Skidmore. Results were unavailable as of press time.
