SAN ANTONIO -- With a 39-28 bi-district playoff loss to Hondo at South San High School Feb. 13, the La Vernia Lady Bears’ basketball season came to an end.

The 2011-12 season was filled with ups and downs for the Lady Bears, but when the district schedule rolled around, the team appeared to be firing on all cylinders. La Vernia closed out the district season with a 36-35 loss to Gonzales, but still had enough wins to grab the district’s third and final playoff spot behind state-ranked Yoakum and Sam Houston.

La Vernia was matched up with the Lady Owls of Hondo in the bi-district round of playoffs. Both teams were eager for that first-round playoff win, and the first period was filled with action. Hondo held a narrow advantage, though, and led 12-7 at the end of the first stanza.

In the second period, the scoring action slowed significantly, and La Vernia was held to just 2 points. The Lady Owls dropped in another 8 points, though, and led 20-9 at the break.

The scoring improved for La Vernia in the third period, as the Lady Bears scored 9. Unfortunately, Hondo matched their efforts, adding 9 more points of its own. The story remained the same throughout the fourth period, as well, as each team added 10 points to the board. With a 39-28 win, Hondo advanced to the area championship, and La Vernia’s season was concluded.

“We gave a great effort tonight, but unfortunately we had difficulty making shots,” Head Coach Ron Glazener Jr. said. “We played very good defense and minimized our turnovers, which normally would lead to a victory. However, we missed a ton of shots we normally make, which led to our demise.”

With the season over, Glazener took a moment to reflect on the past, and glance toward the future.

“I’m very proud of our three seniors who persevered the last several years in getting us back to the playoffs,” he said. “This was a fun group to coach, as they possessed a great team chemistry and belief in one another. We will learn from this experience.

“The future looks bright, with several returning players for next season and good sub-varsity talent to fill the void of those graduating,” he said. “Thanks to our community and fans for their support throughout the season. It has been greatly appreciated by our players and coaching staff.”
