Boys basketball teams prepare for postseason
The Poth Pirate varsity boys basketball team commemorates its 2011-12 district championship. The Pirates will enjoy a first-round bye in the playoffs, but will return to action later this week in the area championship.
While the girls basketball teams are already well into the playoffs, the guys are just getting cranked up. The first round of competition began Monday, and several of the area’s teams are poised to make a solid postseason run this year.
Just over the county line, the East Central Hornets are once again ready to make a run at the title. The team finished its regular season with an impressive record of 25-7, is ranked No. 8 in the city, and leads the city in points scored per game. The Hornets broke the century mark several times this year, including three times during its last five regular-season games, scoring 109 points against both Corpus Christi King and Highlands, and scoring 111 points against South San.
The Hornets finished as the District 28-5A co-champs, splitting games and the title with Corpus Christi Carroll. East Central was scheduled to face O’Connor on Tuesday, Feb. 21, in the bi-district round of competition.
Over in La Vernia, the Bears are also in the playoffs. The team finished as the runner-up from District 28-3A, with an overall record of 19-9, while going 10-2 against district opponents. Kenny Moehrig leads the team in scoring with nearly 12 points per game, and Colby Simms is close behind, averaging more than 9 points per game.
The Bears were scheduled to face Carrizo Springs in the bi-district round of competition. The game was set for Feb. 21, with the winner advancing to the area championship to face Liberty Hill, the winner out of District 25-3A.
In Class 2A, both the Poth Pirates and Nixon-Smiley Mustangs qualified for the playoffs this year. The Pirates won District 30-2A, and the Mustangs finished in a tie for second place in District 29-2A.
Poth started the season a little slow, but gained momentum leading into its district schedule, and made a solid run through league opponents. Poth finished with an identical district record to Karnes City, but a pair of wins in the head-to-head games gave the Pirates the No. 1 seed. As such, Poth has earned the right to sit out during the first round of competition, and will await an opponent for its area championship game to be played later this week.
The Mustangs made an impressive run during the 2011-12 season as well, and headed into the playoffs with a 25-5 overall record. Nixon-Smiley finished in a tie for second place in the district with Marion, but lost a coin toss and entered the playoffs as the No. 3 seed.
The Mustangs were scheduled to face the Karnes City Badgers in the bi-district round of competition. The game was played Monday in Seguin, though results were unavailable at press time. A win would send the Mustangs into the area championship, while a loss would send the team home.
The final team from the area to make the postseason in 2012 is Falls City. The Beavers finished second in District 31-1A to make the playoffs, and did so after playing an abbreviated schedule. Falls City lost several weeks of games because of its extended football season, but made the most of its opportunities to stay in the hunt.
The Beavers were scheduled to face Benavides in the bi-district round of play. The game was set for Monday, Feb. 20, in Three Rivers. To the victor go the spoils, and a trip to the area championship.
