PLEASANTON -- They certainly made the most of their short season, but after a 55-47 loss to Sabinal last Thursday evening in the area championship, the Falls City Beavers are finished playing basketball.

The Beavers jumped out to an early lead in Pleasanton, taking a 15-7 lead over Sabinal after the first period of play. The momentum began to shift slightly in the second period, though, as Sabinal outscored Falls City 12-10. Still, it was the Beavers who held the lead at halftime, entering the locker room with a 25-19 advantage.

After what Head Coach Wade Lawrence called a “rough third quarter” for his Beavers, Sabinal led Falls City by a point at 33-32. Sabinal pulled in front by as many as 11 points in the final stanza, but the Beavers came back to within 5 midway through the final period.

Falls City was unable to close the gap completely, and Sabinal shot well from the free-throw line in the closing minutes of the contest. When the final buzzer sounded, it was Sabinal with the win, 55-47.

Tyler Wiatrek led all scorers in the game with 20 points, including six baskets from beyond the 3-point arc. Hunter Jurgajtis scored 11 for Falls City, Dean Gaskamp dropped in 8 points, and Scott Lyssy was good for another 6. Dylan Cheatham also scored 2 points for the Beavers.

“It was a good season with more ups than downs,” Lawrence said. “I am very proud of our district finish, having to win our final two games against Pettus and Kenedy to give us the opportunity for a playoff run.

“Our four seniors, Tyler Wiatrek, Hunter Jurgajtis, Scott Lyssy, and Wade Jimmerson, really held us together and will be missed greatly,” he added. “We are looking forward to our next season with two returning starters, Phil Lyssy and Dean Gaskamp, making up our front court, and a solid bench that contributed greatly to our success.”

The Beavers finished the year with 11 wins and 11 losses, and were 4-4 in district play.
