Poth powerlifters compete in Castroville, prep for regional
CASTROVILLE -- It was one of their biggest tests this season, but after competing in the Medina Valley powerlifting meet Feb. 18, the lifters from Poth are feeling good about their season, and about their chances at the regional meet.
In a large meet with more than 340 lifters, the Pirates and Pirettes had to put in extra effort to earn their way against the competition. Coach Tim Bordovsky said his lifters responded well, and everyone had an increase in their total weights. As a result, Bordovsky said he believes a total of seven lifters will represent Poth in the regional.
In the boys competition, Chase Wiatrek finished in third place in the 198-pound class, lifting a total of 1,230 pounds. Wiatrek had a bench press of 300 pounds, and turned in a squat and deadlift of 465 pounds each.
Kolby Janek also had an impressive showing against a field of athletes from bigger schools. He finished fifth in the 220-pound class, which was his best showing this season, lifting a total weight of 1,265 pounds. He had a bench press of 325 pounds, and a squat and deadlift of 470 each.
In the girls competition, Yarisa Ramon won the 123-pound class, Marisol Palacios grabbed second in the 198-pound class, and Kadalina Escobedo won bronze in the 97-pound class.
In addition to the medal winners, Poth had several other athletes in the competition. Kayla Feliciano was 11th in her weight class, Justin Fish and Amber Rangel each finished 14th in their respective classes, and Erin Chacon was 16th in her weight division.
Bordovsky said the girls regional meet will be held Saturday, March 3, and he is excited to see how his team performs.
“This is the biggest group of girls Poth has sent to the regional meet,” Bordovsky said. “They did an outstanding job the first half of the season; now it’s time to get the second half started.”
