GOLIAD -- After winning the District 30-2A title, and enjoying a first-round bye in the playoffs, the Poth Pirates began their postseason run against Skidmore-Tynan last Friday evening, but made an early and unexpected exit from the playoffs with a 70-53 loss to the Bobcats.

The two teams looked to be evenly matched in the first period, as points went back and forth. The Bobcats held a slight advantage at the end of the first period, however, and Poth went into the second stanza trailing by 2 points at 15-13.

In the second period of play, the Bobcats lit up the board, scoring an impressive 23 points, while holding Poth to just 9. As the teams headed into halftime, it was Skidmore-Tynan with the lead, 38-22.

Poth Head Coach Fred Radske and the Pirates came out ready to play in the third, and outscored Skidmore-Tynan by 3 points to help narrow the gap. Poth slipped back in the high-scoring fourth period, though, and eventually fell by the final score of 70-53.

Jacob Caloss led the Pirates in scoring with 17 points, followed by Kyler Felux and Jerrek Hosek with 8 points each. Dillon Zaiontz and Zach Lyssy each scored 5, Aaron Friesenhahn scored 4 points, Seth Dunn was good for 3, Brett Kotara scored 2 points, and Spencer Flieller sank a free throw.

Poth ends its shortened basketball season with an overall record of 16-15, and went 12-2 through district play.
