Mustangs are last boys team in the hunt
NIXON -- With victories over Karnes City and Taft, the Nixon-Smiley Mustang basketball team stands as the final boys team from the area remaining in the playoffs.
The Mustangs finished the regular season in a tie for second place in the district with Marion. The two teams flipped a coin, and Marion won, giving it the district’s second seed. Nixon-Smiley entered the playoffs as the No. 3 seed from District 29-2A.
The Mustangs began their 2012 playoff run in a bi-district matchup with Karnes City. The Mustangs dominated from the beginning, and locked the game away with a 63-43 victory.
Nixon-Smiley scored 13 points in the first period, while holding Karnes City to just 9. The Badgers were held to just 7 points in the second period, while the Mustangs dropped in another 27. As the teams headed for the locker rooms, it was Nixon-Smiley on top, 40-16.
The Mustangs continued to outpace the Badgers in the third period, as Nixon-Smiley scored 15. The Mustangs held the Badgers to 11 points in the third stanza, and had the game on cruise control with a 55-27 lead heading into the fourth period.
Karnes City scored 16 in the fourth, while Nixon-Smiley scored 8, but there was no chance of a comeback for the Badgers. Time expired in the game, and it was Nixon-Smiley moving on to the area championship.
In the area championship, the Mustangs took on the Taft Greyhounds, the winners out of District 31-2A. It was a close game, but in the end, it was once again Nixon-Smiley that celebrated victory. It was only a 3-point game with the final score 52-49, but it was more than enough to propel the Mustangs into the regional quarterfinals.
During the game with Taft, Robert Mejia led the team with 24 points, while Seth Barrow dropped in 15. Damian Perez and Jaime Moreno each scored 6, and Jared Van Auken scored 1 point from the free-throw line.
The Mustangs were scheduled to meet Cole Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 8 p.m. in Seguin. Cole is the team that won District 29-2A, and defeated Nixon-Smiley twice en route to the title. The Cougars won the first game back on Jan. 10 by the score of 54-44, and then beat the Mustangs 68-26 on Feb. 3. There is even more riding on the game this time, however, as the winner earns a trip to the region tournament.
