Pirettes advance to state
Poth fans help celebrate Head Coach Peggy Hosek’s 800th win.
POTH -- With a trio of regional wins last week, the Poth Pirette basketball team has once again earned the right to travel to Austin to compete in the state tournament.
The Pirettes began last week’s play with a regional quarterfinal game against Luling. The Pirettes had little to no difficulty with the Lady Eagles, leading 27-6 after the first period, and holding a 41-20 advantage at the break.
The onslaught continued in the second half, as Poth outscored Luling 16-4 in the third, and 25-12 in the fourth period. Luling had no answer for the Poth offense, and the Pirettes wrapped up a healthy 82-36 win.
In addition to advancing the Pirettes to the regional tournament, the win was also special for another reason. Poth’s victory over Luling marked the 800th win for Head Coach Peggy Hosek, a milestone very few high school coaches ever reach. Fans and players celebrated with signs that simply read, “800.”
When the celebration began to fade, Poth turned its attention to the regional semifinals, where the Pirettes took on Schulenburg Feb. 24 in Seguin. Poth once again jumped out to a sizable lead in the first period, going on top by 10 at the end of the first stanza. The Pirette defense allowed twice as many points to the Shorthorns in the second period, but still outpaced the team from Schulenburg, and went into the locker room with a 41-24 halftime lead.
Poth doubled up on Schulenburg in the third period, taking a 57-32 advantage into the final eight minutes of play. The Shorthorns were able to outscore Poth in the final period by a single point, but never threatened a comeback, and eventually yielded to Poth’s advancement by the final score of 68-44.
With just one game standing between the Pirettes and another trip to the state tournament, the team returned to Seguin Feb. 25 for the Region IV title game against Thorndale. It was one of the closest games the Pirettes played this season, at least in the first half.
The teams each came out aggressive to start the game, and defense was the name of the game. The high-scoring Pirettes were held to just 18 points in the first half of play, and actually trailed Thorndale by a point heading into halftime.
Things were different in the second half, however, as Poth picked up the pace, remained aggressive, and pulled away from Thorndale. The Pirettes tacked on 33 second-half points, while allowing only 20 at the opposite end of the floor. When time finally expired in the regional final, it was Poth with the solid win, 51-39.
With another Region IV title to their credit, the Pirettes will now shift their focus to the state semifinals, and to the Edgewood Bulldogs. Edgewood enters the state tournament with an overall record of 31-6, and earned playoff wins over DeKalb, New Diana, New Boston, Centerville, and Winnsboro. The winner of the game will advance to the state finals to face either Brock, the defending state champions, or Tuscola Jim Ned.
The Pirettes will face Edgewood this Friday, March 2, inside the Frank Erwin Center on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. Tipoff is set for 10 a.m. The Class 2A state final will be played Saturday, March 3, at 2 p.m. inside the Erwin Center.
