1938-2012

Vernon D. “Dave” McIvor, 73, lost his battle with cancer Friday, Feb. 24, 2012. He passed away peacefully in his home in La Vernia, Texas. Dave was born Oct. 1, 1938, in Bellingham, Wash., the son of Vernon L. and Dorothy Burley McIvor.

He married Donna L. Dietrich on Nov. 27, 1964, and together they raised two sons, Scott David and Patrick Douglas.

Dave spent most of his adult career in the health field, starting as a U.S. Navy corpsman in 1956 in San Diego and serving aboard the USS Hancock. He retired in 2004, after spending more than 35 years in community hospital administration. He served as both hospital CEO and nursing home administrator in Minnesota, Washington, and Montana.

He believed that small communities were the very best places to live and raise a family. Although he had been in La Vernia less than three years, he felt a part of the community and participated in activities as much as his health would permit. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, and watching his grandsons play sports.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Scott D. McIvor; and two brothers, Roy McIvor and Jimmy McIvor.

He is survived by his wife, Donna McIvor of La Vernia; his son, Patrick D. McIvor and wife Martha Diaz of La Vernia; his grandsons, Luke and Noah McIvor of La Vernia; his brother, George McIvor and wife Linda of Tacoma, Wash.; and many cousins, nephews, nieces, and extended family members.

A graveside memorial service was held Tuesday, March 6, at 10:30 a.m. in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

Memorial contributions may be made to the La Vernia Lions Club, P.O. Box 291, La Vernia, TX 78121.
