Help Wanted

The City of Poth is currently accepting applications for the position of Chief of Police. The Chief is responsible for all operational and administrative aspects of the police department, provide patrol, criminal investigations, crime prevention, enforce all laws and ordinances and be responsible for public health and safety. Must be community oriented, have strong public relations skills, strong work ethics, must be physically fit and maintain a professional image while in uniform. A High School Diploma or GED is required. Must have a valid Class C or higher Texas Driver’s License. Must be TCLEOSE Master Peace Officer certified and have at least 5 years of experience with law enforcement agency; SWAT, Gang Unit, Narcotics or Detective experience a plus, pass a thorough background check investigation with drug screen and credit check. The City offers benefit package with retirement plan and medical insurance. Salary dependent on qualifications. EOE. 1926-2012

Eli “Papa” Strey, 85, of La Vernia, Texas, passed away Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012. He was born Nov. 10, 1926, in Guadalupe County, the son of Otto Fritz and Alvina Louise (Mattke) Strey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sherlene Carusella Strey; and his brothers, Harold, Bernie, Kenneth, Otto, Eddie, and Eugene Strey.

Eli is survived by his son, Jackie Strey and wife Diane of New Berlin; his daughter, Janice Tullis and husband Jimmy of La Vernia; his grandchildren, Jennifer, Julie, Jessica, James, Stephanie, and Jacquelyn; his great-grandchildren, Moira, Shelby, “Bubba” John, Makaila, Marissa, Zoey, Jayden, Scott, Courtney, and Hunter; his sisters, Ruby Lee Pierdolla and Aileen McInvale; his brothers, Wilfloyd Strey and Otto Strey; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving family.

Visitation took place Tuesday, Feb. 28, from 5-8 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in La Vernia.

A funeral service was held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in La Vernia, with Dr. Robert Palan officiating.

Interment followed in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in La Vernia.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund, 310 Seguin St., La Vernia, TX 78121.
