Poth addresses traffic, road issues

POTH -- As a possible solution to slow down traffic on Sutherland Street, Poth Police Chief Lambert Jendrzey has proposed the installation of a four-way stop at the intersection of Sutherland and Carroll streets. The proposal was made to the Poth City Council during its Feb. 21 meeting, according to Mayor Travis Pruski after the meeting.

With reduced visibility on the corner caused by the new Hunt Oil building, the stop is a way to protect drivers, mainly those on Carroll Street, who might not be seen.

The chief also suggested adding a stop next to the elementary school several blocks over. This would redirect traffic to Dickson Street and then to F.M. 541 to the traffic light, so traffic won’t flood directly onto U.S. 181, Jendrzey said.

The council did not act on the proposals, taking them under advisement, with possible action at a later date.

Continuing to address the needs of the growing community, the council set a workshop to discuss a project to renovate the streets of Poth, specifically to address potential repair issues on Voges Street. The workshop will allow residents to give input regarding pavement needs and insight into drainage issues.

“That’s our last big fish to fry,” Mayor Pruski said of the street updates. The Voges Street repairs are expected to be among the last in the project.

A completion date for the project has not been set. The city will engineer plans for updates with the information collected during the workshop; work may not start this summer. The workshop will take place at 6 p.m. April 16, an hour before the scheduled council meeting.

In the final steps to prepare for the upcoming elections, the council approved to formally join its election with that of the Poth Independent School District (ISD) board of trustees. This will allow both entities to cut down on the costs of equipment rental.

Although previously discussed by the council and Poth ISD, the Wilson Memorial Hospital Board will not join forces with them this year, as no election is due for members. The hospital board intends to share costs next time with the other two entities.

Whether an election takes place is dependent upon citizens applying for places on the ballot. The deadline to apply was March 5.

If an election is held, balloting will take place in the Poth ISD administration building instead of City Hall.
