Letter: Redistricting maps not about race or ethnicity
Ciro Rodriguez’ recent comments regarding the new proposed redistricting maps as ordered by the court shows the entitlement mentality that predominates in among liberal Hispanic Democrats like Rodriguez.
Rodriguez wants the court to draw a congressional district that is predominantly Hispanic and, by assumption, Democrat so he can have a better chance to win. Besides asking why Rodriguez assumes that all Hispanics are Democrats, it should be asked why he cannot craft a campaign message that appeals to anyone in any new district regardless of race or ethnicity?
The role of an elected official in America should be to represent the views of his or her constituents, not just the views of any one given ethnic/racial group. Rather than complaining about new district maps, and holding up the political process for all Texans, Ciro Rodriguez should stop playing the role of a victimized minority who expects preferential treatment, even in politics.
Rodriguez should roll up his sleeves and campaign in his new district with a message that appeals to all his new constituents, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, and economic status.
