STOCKDALE -- It has been a good season for the Stockdale High School powerlifting team, and the group wrapped up its regular season with meets in Goliad and East Central.

It was a good last meet for the Lady Brahma lifters, as two competitors went home from Goliad Feb. 18 with a bit of hardware. In the 181-pound class, Brittany Martinez outdid her competitors to win gold with a first-place finish. She lifted a total of 565 pounds, with a bench press of 110 pounds, a squat of 185, and deadlift of 270 pounds.

In the 123-pound class, Kristen Moore turned in another strong showing with her third-place finish. She had a bench press of 95 pounds, a squat of 210 pounds, and lifted more than twice her own body weight in the deadlift at 250 pounds.

On Feb. 25, the guys traveled to East Central for a competition of their own. Like the girls, several guys returned home with medals for their efforts.

In the 132-pound class, John Dugi won gold with his three-lift total of 980 pounds. Dugi managed a bench press of 225, a squat of 355 pounds, and a deadlift of 400 pounds. Teammate Matt Valadez finished second in the 148-pound class, lifting a total of 1,170 pounds. He had a bench press of 255 pounds, a squat of 455, and a deadlift of 460 pounds.

Also competing at East Central were Conner McLaughlin, Perry Bone, and Christian Rodriguez. McLaughlin had his best meet of the year with a total of 930 pounds while competing in the 165-pound class. He had a bench press of 230, a squat of 300, and a deadlift of 400. Bone had a three-lift total of 885 pounds, lifting 215 on the bench, and 335 pounds in both the squat and deadlift. Rodriguez lifted a total of 1,025 pounds while competing in the 181-pound class, turning in a bench press of 210 pounds, a squat of 380, and a deadlift of 435 pounds.

The team will now begin shifting its focus to the regionals. Stockdale had two girls qualify for the competition and three guys.

MaKaley Perez, who competes in the 105-pound class, qualified for the regional meet with her total lift of 500 pounds. With a bench press of 85 pounds, a squat of 195, and a deadlift of 220 pounds, she will be moving on in the competition. Teammate Moore will also be at the regional competition in the 123-pound class. Her bench press effort of 100 pounds, along with a squat of 210 and a deadlift of 250 pounds gave her a three-lift total of 560 pounds and a pass to the regionals.

On the guys side, Valadez, Dugi, and Darion McMahan will compete in the regional meet. Dugi and Valadez qualified with their totals achieved at the East Central meet, and McMahan has long since been ready for the regional meet with his three-lift total of 1,245 pounds. McMahan weighs just 130 pounds himself, but turned in a bench press of 300 pounds, a deadlift of 470, and a squat of 475 pounds.

The girls meet was held this past weekend at Bishop High School, and the boys will hold their meet this Saturday, March 10, in Bishop.
