SEGUIN -- After taking the court with the Cole Cougars for the third time this season, the Nixon-Smiley Mustang basketball team’s 2012 postseason run has come to an end. Cole defeated Nixon-Smiley 44-33 in the regional quarterfinals Feb. 28.

Following their two District 29-2A losses to Cole, the Mustangs were looking for a little payback in the playoffs, and the team nearly pulled it off. The Mustangs led after three periods of play, but then looked on as Cole took the lead and the win to advance to the region tournament.

The teams appeared evenly matched in the first period, as each found ways to score. Cole pulled ahead slightly to close out the first stanza, and led Nixon-Smiley by the score of 9-7 after one.

Momentum began to swing the other way in the second period, however, and Nixon-Smiley took the lead. The Mustangs held on until halftime, outscoring the Cougars 14-7 during the second period, and went into the locker room with a 21-16 advantage.

After the break, Cole came out strong and outpaced the Mustangs in the third, but Nixon-Smiley still maintained its lead, 33-30, as the teams moved into the final eight minutes of play.

It was at this point in the game when things fell apart for the Mustangs. While Cole went on to add another 14 points onto the board, Nixon-Smiley was completely shut out. The Cougars caught the Mustangs and then blew by them for a 44-33 win, and the right to play in the Region IV tournament.

Seth Barrow led the Mustang offensive effort with 10 points, followed by Damian Perez with 8 points and Jaime Moreno with another 7. Robert Mejia scored 4 for Nixon-Smiley, and Jared Van Auken and Matt Finch each scored 2 points.

With the loss, the Mustangs end their season with an overall record of 27-6. The team finished in a tie for second place in District 29-2A, won their bi-district playoff game, and added an area championship to its résumé.
