The February Floresville High School female student of the month is Serina Holder. Serina is the 17-year-old daughter of Debra and John Holder.

Serina is a member of the National Honor Society and has been named to the A Honor Roll the past three years. She has received the Outstanding Student of the Year Award in Pre-AP Physics, Pre-Ap Biology, and Art II. She also received recognition for perfect attendance the past two years.

She is a member of the Art Club and participated in the 2009-10 VASE Competition. Serina is also a member of the varsity powerlifting team.

Throughout high school, she has participated in numerous photography contests in Wilson County, Bexar County, and the state. Through her participation in 4-H, Serina has previously participated on the 4-H Food Challenge Team, winning district in 2010-11. Last year, she placed second in the 4-H State Rifle Team contest. The previous year, she placed seventh at the state competition. She is also a former member of the GNYAC softball team.

Despite the demands of her academic and extracurricular activities, Serina has volunteered countless hours in her community. She has participated in highway cleanup projects throughout high school. Through 4-H, she was a presenter for the Food Challenge Demonstration for the 4-H Food Workshop and County Show. She assisted with setting up and cleaning up at stock show and auction the past four years. Serina assisted at the County 4-H Dance and supervised games at the Fun Fair. Through her church involvement, Serina has volunteered her time repairing and remodeling a widow’s home. She also decorated and taught Vacation Bible School, painted faces at the Church Fall Festival, took pictures and created a church directory, and worked in the church nursery.

Serina has worked with the local Boy Scout organization to achieve Arrow of Light and worked at its Fall Festival. She has worked at the Cub Scout Day Camp and in the concession stand at county youth basketball games. Serina also worked at the county tractor pull and at a rescue horse ranch. She has donated various items to charity, including children’s Christmas gifts, food, toiletries, school supplies, turkeys, and cookies. She has collected aluminum cans as a youth group fund-raiser and collected aluminum can tabs for “Dialysis For Kids.” Serina has also spent time baking desserts for cancer awareness fund-raising drives and has taught cooking. Serina has used her time and talent to create videos for the Cub Scout camp, her church Vacation Bible School, and high school graduates.

She works in both dog care and child care.

Upon graduation in June, Serina plans to attend Texas State University or Texas A&M University to pursue a major in physical therapy.

The February male student of the month is Rafael Arellano. Rafael is the 18-year-old son of Rosa Maria and Rafael Arellano.

Rafael’s strengths are restorative, harmony, arranger, positivity, and consistency.

Rafael has been active in FHS athletics. He is a member of the varsity football and soccer teams. For his efforts on the field, Rafael has earned recognition. As a defensive end, he was named First Team All-District, as well as Honorable Mention All-District.

Rafael has been a member of the Culinary Arts program at FHS. He and his fellow classmates attended a culinary arts competition earlier this year.

Rafael is also active in his church. He serves as an usher during services and has attended the ACTS retreat. Rafael has also volunteered his time to Adopt-A-Highway projects.

Rafael is currently employed at Bill Miller in Floresville.

Upon graduation in June, Rafael plans to attend Angelo State University, where he will major in criminal justice.
