George C. Boyd went to be with the Lord Monday, March 5, 2012. He was born to Jim Boyd and Erna Nee Sedberry on Nov. 8, 1917, in Hawley, Texas.
He quit school in eighth grade to support his mom and six siblings as a telegram delivery boy in Houston at 13. At 18, he joined the CCC camps. He met Faye Goddard at church and married her in 1939.
George first worked at Texas Sash & Door Co. and then Ellington Field, repairing planes during World War II. His brother Jack was in the Marines, Odell in the Army, and Chester in the Korean conflict in the Navy. Two sisters, Betty and Adeline, waited and prayed back home. Postwar at Hobby Airport, he assisted pioneer airlines. From 1955-60 in California, he was in fabrication research and development at Aerojet General. Back in Houston in 1960, he began working at NASA for 10 years, earning several awards in the space race. Later, he spent two years in Uvalde, opening his blacksmith shop, and then to San Antonio in 1972. His beloved Faye died of cancer in 1984. Moving to St. Hedwig, he lived alongside family living independently until March 5, 2012, when he went to join the Lord and his sweet wife.
George is survived by his daughters, Sharon Johnson and husband Robert, and Deborah Stalowski; his grandchildren, Marie Koepp and husband Gorden, Carolyn Karwick, George Johnson and wife Marilou, Patricia Price, Frances Warren, Robert E. Johnson and wife Frances, James Johnson and wife Corylee, Amanda Garcia and husband Peter, and Justin Stalowski; great-grandchildren Chris, Heather, and Stephenie Koepp, Kathrine and Callie Karwick, Nina, Christina, Jeremiah, and Emily Johnson, Faith, Daniel, Grace, and Hope Price, Jessica Hollingworth, Shelby Warren, Zachary, Blake and Archer Johnson, and Caleb and Marilyn Johnson; his brother, Jack Boyd; his sister, Adeline Thompson; eight great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews who called him “Unc”; and cousins and friends all over Texas and other places.
A memorial service will be held in the Open Door Baptist Church in Cibolo on Saturday, March 24, at 3 p.m. for all the friends in the La Vernia, St. Hedwig, and San Antonio area who were unable to attend his Houston funeral, and wish to say goodbye.
