Letter: Stretching the truth about oil
I was half listening to the radio in my truck last week when I heard a sound bite from the president. I normally expect this president to stretch the truth, but this statement was such a whopper, the president felt compelled to repeat it. Since I was driving, I could not stop to write down the exact quote, so I’ll paraphrase him instead of quote him.
The president used the collective “we,” meaning all of us as Americans, when he said, “Let me repeat, we have 2 percent of the world’s oil reserves and we use 20 percent of the world’s oil!”
The intent here was clear; President Obama wants us to think that we own only 2 percent of all the oil in the world, but we consume 20 percent or more of the entire world’s oil. He will do anything, even lie, to shame us into buying “green energy,” particularly electric cars. But at least be truthful with us, Mr. President.
As everyone in the oil industry knows, the world’s oil reserve refers to the oil that has already been pumped from the ground. The world’s supply of oil is what is yet to be pumped.
The truth the president does not want you to know is this: The total supply of oil of the United States -- untapped oil, still in the ground -- is greater than the total oil supply of Saudi Arabia! Processing this supply of oil will create and maintain thousands of high-paying jobs, many of them here in Texas and Wilson County.
We used to be able to disagree with our political leaders on policy but know that they would tell us the truth. No longer.
Another four years of an unchecked Obama, I fear, will turn us into the greatest debtor nation in history as well as make us a dependent socialist state. We have a president who spends over a billion dollars in taxpayer money on failed green energy companies, but yet refuses to allow the Keystone Pipeline to proceed, which could have provided up to 20,000 jobs almost immediately.
Please remember this as we enter the political season. Vote for the truth, not a lie.
