The Greater La Vernia Chamber of Commerce met March 7, in the Bluebonnet Restaurant in La Vernia. The winner of the monthly drawing for Spotlight Member of the Month was Dwight Koepp for Koepp Chevrolet. New members introduced included The Music Loft, McGarrell Orthodontics, Balloon Creations by Darla, Worthington Homes, and the La Vernia Lions Club.

Speaker Crystal Darby of the University of Texas at San Antonio Small Business Development Center discussed social media and how businesses can use it to expand their communications to customers, clients, and employees.

“Social media is the blending of technical and social interaction for the co-creation of value,” Darby said. “It’s like ‘word-of-mouth’ on steroids.”

The Greater La Vernia Chamber of Commerce decided it will offer a four-hour class on social media in the near future to be led by Darby.

The chamber members voted to approve a donation to the La Vernia Lions Club for maintenance on the parade float used to participate in more than 10 parades a year around Texas. The Greater La Vernia Chamber of Commerce is a co-sponsor of the float. A vote of approval was also expressed in support of the chamber’s sponsoring a La Vernia Little League team.

The Keep La Vernia Beautiful Committee recognized guest Iris Seale, Master Gardener, who has agreed to serve on the Keep La Vernia Beautiful Beautification Award panel to help select recipients. Herb Williams, general manager of S.S. Water Supply Corp., and Debra Salmon, manager for the La Vernia Country Store, are additional panel members who will be recognized at next month’s meeting.

Another guest was Tracye Kaitner, staff writer for the La Vernia News. The chamber has recently moved its office to the La Vernia News, located on Chihuahua Street.

La Vernia News Office Manager Cheryl Reed said, “We’re glad to have the chamber office with us. We welcome members and visitors to drop by.”

The next meeting of the Greater La Vernia Chamber of Commerce will be on Wednesday, April 11, at the La Vernia High School Culinary Arts Department.
