POTH -- After a respectable 5-3 start to its season, the Poth Pirate baseball team began District 30-2A play last week with a pair of wins over Karnes City and Natalia.

Braden Lyssy was on the hill for the Pirates, as Poth took on Karnes City March 5. In doing so, the senior picked up his first district win of the season with a 9-5 victory over the Badgers.

The Pirates scratched 2 runs to begin play in the top of the first inning, but gave 1 run back to the Badgers in the bottom of the first. Poth was able to add 1 run in the top of the second inning, and scored 2 more in the top of the third inning to take a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the third.

Karnes City managed to score a run in the third, and then put 2 more on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a 1-run game at 5-4. The Pirates answered in the top of the seventh inning, though, scoring 4 runs to put the Badgers in a deep hole. Karnes City did manage to score 1 additional run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was far from enough to get past Poth.

While Lyssy earned the win on the mound, Trey Broyles and Tyler Kallies helped make the difference at the plate. Broyles went 2 for 4 during his plate appearances, and snatched four bags on the base path. Kallies was 2 for 3 at the plate, hitting a double and a triple, while driving in a run for the Pirates.

The Pirates then faced Natalia March 9, in a cold and rainy affair. The Pirates remained focused, though, and eventually notched a 9-3 win.

Poth once again got out to a good start early as the Pirates scored 3 runs in the first inning of play. Poth exploded in the third inning, though, scoring 5 runs to take a big lead. The Pirates added a little insurance in the seventh inning with 1 final run, and soon celebrated the 9-3 win.

Broyles pitched all seven innings for the Pirates, and picked up his first District 30-2A win of the year.

The Pirates were scheduled to travel to Dilley March 13, but will be at home this Friday, March 16, to take on the Jourdanton Indians. It will be Poth’s first home game of the season.
