Alex Cruz signs on to set for OLLU volleyball team

LA VERNIA -- Moments after watching her teammate sign a letter of intent to Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) in San Antonio March 8, La Vernia Lady Bear setter Alex Cruz sat down in the same chair and did the same. In doing so, Cruz has agreed to attend school and play volleyball for the Saints.
Cruz considered several schools before making her decision to attend OLLU, but ultimately decided on the school because of her visits to the campus, and because of its proximity to home.
There is a lot about going to school that Cruz is looking forward to, and she said she is excited about the opportunity. While at OLLU, she plans to major in nursing, a fact that helps to explain why anatomy is her favorite subject this year.
Cruz said she will miss her friends next year, but knows she will still see her family a lot. She plans to visit often on the weekends, and knows she will appreciate the home-cooked meals.
Like any four-year letterman, Cruz has an entire high school career’s worth of game memories. Still, one match will always be remembered above all others, and that was the Lady Bears’ win over Wimberley in this year’s regional quarterfinal.
“That was the big one,” Cruz said. “That was the state game for us.”
In addition to volleyball, Cruz also played basketball, and was a key member of the Lady Bear basketball team this season. She also enjoys spending time with her little brother.
Cruz’s parents, John and Jessica, are glad to see their daughter is staying close to home, and were careful to express how proud they are of their daughter and her accomplishments.
“She is the epitome of patience and dedication to the sport,” John said. “She was patient, and then did an outstanding job once it was her turn.”
“We are very proud of her,” Jessica said. “She put in a lot of hard work.”
Cruz ended her four-year varsity volleyball run with a superb senior season. She was a team captain for La Vernia, was named to the all-tournament teams at Wimberley and Hays, was named as the Class 3A Setter of the Year, was named to the academic all-district team, the Class 3A all-area team, and was the Class 3A all-area MVP. She was also named as an alternate to the all-state team.
