LA VERNIA -- After a great senior season of volleyball, La Vernia’s Claire LaHue showed she has what it takes to compete at the collegiate level, and will now trade in her Lady Bear uniform for a Saints jersey. LaHue signed her letter of intent March 8, and will attend school at Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) in San Antonio next fall.
LaHue considered playing for several different schools in Texas, but really had it come down to a choice between OLLU and East Texas Baptist University in Marshall. After a visit to OLLU, LaHue said her decision became much easier.
“I really liked the school, Coach Lee, and I like that it is close to home,” she said.
Being close to home is important to LaHue, and she is excited that her friends and family will be able to watch most of her games.
The plan for LaHue is to major in biomedical science. She said she is interested in working in the pharmacy industry, and knows her time at Our Lady of the Lake will put her on a great career path.
Still, it is the opportunity to continue playing volleyball that LaHue is looking forward to the most. She understands it is a great opportunity, and she is ready to take advantage of it.
“I am very excited to be playing,” the reserved LaHue said. “I’m ready for four more years.”
While she is looking forward to her time in college, LaHue said she would certainly miss her team in La Vernia. Well, most of her team, anyway. Lady Bear setter Alex Cruz will also be attending OLLU, and LaHue is happy about that fact.
“It worked out for the best,” she said.
Having played in a successful program throughout her high school career, it is certain LaHue has a number of fond memories from her time on the court. Still, there is one game she said she is sure to remember above all others, and that was the Lady Bears’ regional quarterfinals win over Wimberley this past season. It was one of the most exciting wins for the La Vernia program, and LaHue even scored the game-winning point.
So what does the talented senior do when she isn’t working hard in school or on the volleyball court? “Not much,” according to her. The shy outside hitter even described herself as somewhat of a “homebody.”
LaHue’s parents were present as she signed her letter of intent, and her mother, Margaret, was smiling from ear to ear.
“I am super excited,” Margaret said. “I am very proud of her.”
