(AUSTIN) -- Texas has received the top ranking for government spending transparency in an annual report on all states issued by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (U.S.PIRG). The state’s Texas Transparency website is developed and maintained by the office of Texas Comptroller Susan Combs.

“I’m proud to be at the forefront of setting standards for government transparency and we will keep striving to improve our initiatives,” Combs said. “From the time I took office we have worked to expand our transparency efforts to provide taxpayers online access to multiple levels of state spending and financial information. Taxpayers have the right to know how their money is spent and transparency ensures government is held accountable to the people it serves.”

The Texas Transparency website is at www.texastransparency.org. U.S. PIRG noted the comprehensive financial information the website provides along with historical check-register level detail that is downloadable. The Comptroller’s office also provides information on local government transparency on its website and encourages local governments around the state to launch financial transparency initiatives.

U.S.PIRG did an extensive state-by-state analysis as it pushes for higher standards of government transparency. The group’s Following the Money 2012 report can be found at www.uspirg.org/reports/usp/following-money-2012.

Thankfully because of the states demand for transparency, Floresville taxpayers have been able learn about very foul decisions made by our city government. Thank you WCN for researching and publishing those things.

Hooray for Texas. This what Obama promised for the US government if he was elected. Not quite there yet.
