The Stockdale Chamber of Commerce held its regular monthly meeting Feb. 27. Once again, discussions centered around the upcoming Watermelon Jubilee that will be held Thursday through Saturday, June 14-16.
Stockdale City Manager Banks Akin was in attendance for the meeting and updated the chamber of commerce board of directors on the road construction along S.H. 123 and its anticipated completion date. Due to this construction, the Jubilee Parade route may have to be altered slightly for 2012 to avoid the area under construction. More details will be provided as plans are finalized in the upcoming weeks.
Also discussed was the sign-up and registration for the 2012 Queens contests. If your child is interested in being part of the Jubilee or rodeo courts, information packets and entry forms can be obtained from the school counselor’s office at Stockdale Independent School District. Children in grades kindergarten through fourth grades (incoming, during the 2012-13 school year) are eligible to run for Little Miss/Mr. Stockdale or Little Miss/Mr. Rodeo. Ladies in grades six through nine (incoming, during the 2012-13 school year) are eligible to run for Jubilee or Rodeo Princess, and ladies in grades 10-12 (incoming, during the 2012-13 school year) are eligible to run for Queen Melone or Miss Rodeo Stockdale. Candidates for Queen Melone and Miss Rodeo Stockdale may earn scholarships of up to $2,000 each, and all candidates in the Jubilee and Rodeo courts are eligible to win 10 percent of their total earnings by qualifying as the overall “top seller” for 2012. This is a great opportunity to become more involved and represent the heritage of our community and the Watermelon Jubilee.
The crowning of Queen Melone LXVIII and her Court will take place Saturday, June 9, at 7 p.m. in the Stockdale Elementary School cafeteria. The crowning of Miss Rodeo Stockdale 2012 and her Court will take place Friday, June 15, at 7 p.m. during the rodeo pre-show.
This year’s rodeo performances will be produced by the Lester Meier Rodeo Company, who is back at the Watermelon Jubilee for the first time in more than 10 years. We are excited to welcome Lester Meier back to Stockdale!
Registration for the fourth annual Watermelon Crawl 5K and Kids Crawl race will begin Sunday, April 1. Registration forms can be picked up at the Brahma Bullpen in Stockdale or downloaded from our website at www.stockdaletx.org. Early registration is $20 for the Watermelon Crawl and $10 for the Kids Crawl. All participants will receive a T-shirt, and awards will be given to the winner in each age division of the Watermelon Crawl and to all children participating in the Kids Crawl.
The second installment of professional wrestling at the Watermelon Jubilee will take place on Thursday, June 14. Watermelon Rumble II will begin at 7 p.m. in the park and will feature a Texas heavyweight title match. Mark your calendars to attend; visit our website for more information!
We are in the process of securing our 2012 Jubilee sponsors, so if you or your business is interested in being a sponsor of our event, visit our website for complete information and a sponsorship package. We are also looking for food and craft vendors that would like to participate in the Jubilee festivities. If you are interested in this opportunity, vendor packets can be obtained from our website or by calling Betty Soto at 830-477-1414.
The next regular meeting of the Stockdale Chamber of Commerce board of directors will be held on Monday, March 26, at 7 p.m. in the offices of the Stockdale Economic Development Corp. We encourage you to attend if you are interested in becoming involved in any of our activities.
Sherry D. Lambeck is the president of the Stockdale Chamber of Commerce.
