FLORESVILLE -- While many area high school kids were taking it easy during spring break, the softball teams from East Central and Floresville got together last Wednesday afternoon for a game.
Madison Strunk took to the mound for the Lady Hornets of East Central, while Tori Bayer handled the pitching duties for the Jaguars. The game was close for a while, but everything changed in the sixth inning, and East Central rolled on to a 6-0 win.
After a pair of scoreless innings, East Central broke the stalemate in the top of the third inning. The Hornets moved a runner around the base path, and eventually scored her from third base to give the visiting team a 1-0 lead. Then, in the top of the fourth, Strunk helped her own cause, as she went “yard” over the left-centerfield fence. The Lady Hornets led 2-0, and Floresville knew it needed to get something going on offense.
The Jaguars were unable to respond in the bottom of the fourth, though Bayer and the Floresville defense kept East Central from scoring in the fifth. The Jags came up empty in the bottom of the fifth, then watched the proverbial wheels come off in the top of the sixth with one swing of the bat.
With two outs in the top of the sixth inning, Floresville was looking to retire the side. The Lady Hornets had other plans, however, and put together a little rally. East Central eventually loaded the bags for Taylor Doege, and the sophomore responded. Doege cranked a grand slam over straightaway centerfield, driving in four East Central runs, and giving the Lady Hornets a 6-0 lead, and the eventual win.
The win lifted East Central to a season mark of 12-6, while the loss dropped Floresville to 8-9 on the year.
