BISHOP -- Chase Wiatrek and Kolby Janek represented Poth Powerlifting at the boys regional meet March 10. Wiatrek went into the meet as the region’s ninth-ranked lifter and finished sixth, while Janek went into the meet with a 10th-place ranking, but left with a fifth-place medal.

Wiatrek turned in a new personal best performance, totaling 1,295 pounds. He had a bench press of 320 pounds, a deadlift of 480 pounds, and was just shy of a 500-pound squat at 495. As for Janek, he turned in a 1,255-pound performance with a bench press of 305 pounds, a deadlift of 450, and a massive squat of 500 pounds.

“Chase finished the season with his best meet, and as high on the list as he possibly could,” said Poth Powerlifting Coach Tim Bordovsky. “I am very proud of the way he came back from a knee injury and fought through the season, accomplishing all that he did. I couldn’t ask for anything more from an athlete.”

Bordovsky also had some kind words about Janek and the efforts he made during the 2012 season.

“Kolby gained some great experience this year and finished his season with a regional medal,” Bordovsky said. “He has two more years of powerlifting ahead of him and is already setting goals for next season.”

While Janek is only a sophomore, Wiatrek is a senior and will graduate this spring. He competed in powerlifting all four years at Poth High School, advancing to regionals the last three years.

“He will be greatly missed,” Bordovsky said. “Chance Dziuk also helped a lot at the meets. Between wrapping and tracking opponents -- he deserves a debt of gratitude.”
