BISHOP -- After another impressive showing, this time at the regional powerlifting meet, Stockdale lifters Darion McMahan and Matt Valadez have qualified for the state meet.
The Brahma duo traveled to Bishop High School March 10 to compete in the Region 5, Division 3 meet. McMahan won gold, finishing first in the 132-pound class, and Valadez took home a bronze medal for his third-place finish in the 148-pound class.
McMahan turned in a three-lift total of 1,215 pounds -- a new regional meet record for the weight class. His bench press of 300 pounds and squat of 470 pounds were also new region records. His deadlift was good for 445 pounds. The numbers are all quite impressive, especially for an athlete who weighs just 130 pounds. In addition to the gold, McMahan also received the Outstanding Lightweight Bench Press Award.
In the 148-pound weight class, Valadez powered up 1,145 pounds en route to his bronze medal. He had a bench press of 245 pounds, a squat of 435, and deadlift of 465 pounds.
The pair will continue training in anticipation of the Texas High School Powerlifting Association state meet this Saturday, March 24, in Abilene. Winning gold obviously qualified McMahan for the meet, and Valadez has qualified as an alternate.
