Bush, Kotara catch calves in Houston
Stockdale FFA member Dakota Kotara and Wilson County 4-H’er Gage Bush were each able to catch and halter one of 14 calves during the March 9 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo calf scramble.
Strength and determination took over for some, as scramblers began to capture the calves and pull them into the winners’ square.
In exchange for a successful scramble, Gage and Dakota each will receive a $1,250 certificate to be used for the purchase of a registered breeding beef heifer, breeding dairy heifer, or market steer.
In 2013, they will return with their scramble projects to the Houston Livestock Show for a special competition and a $250 bonus from their donors. Prior to the 2013 show, exhibitors have the opportunity to compete in the Calf Scramble Progress Show as a means of judging their calves’ progress prior to showing at the Houston Livestock Show.
Each year, approximately 375 calf purchase certificates are donated. Since the calf scramble was added to the show in 1942, more than $10 million has been awarded in certificates and bonuses to nearly 20,000 youth.
