I had tacos for supper last night at one of my favorite fast food joints in Floresville.

I've always liked their tacos, but I think they used pink slime. Always have, I'm sure, I just didn't know what the soft beef mush was called until the media announced it a few weeks ago. Pink slime's got a catchy ring to it, making it easy to call a boycott against it and demand its removal from supermarket shelves.

Some think this is part of a larger effort to advocate against beef. The meat used in pink slime is not unhealthy. It merely uses the scrap pieces from the beef and it's finely ground. Is it that it's treated with ammonia for sanitary purposes and now that people know, they are afraid to eat it?

My husband loves Vienna Sausages and potted meat. What do you suppose those are? Looks a lot like pink slime to me.

People are such lemmings.

Suddenly everyone protests pink slime, but if they really knew what was good for them, they might examine chicken nuggets. Look at the 38 ingredients that make up these little jewels. You'll find some much more offensive stuff than just ammonia! Try tertiary butylhydroquinone and 13 corn-based concoctions. Or look at what is passed off as fish sticks that we've all fed our kids from time to time.

I suspect it's like my pediatrician said (perhaps slightly tongue-in-cheek) once when I asked him about one of my children who had a habit of eating the chunks of dried dog food: It's probably as much or more nutritious than a lot of the food that's passed off for human consumption. He just advised to keep it clean, like put it on a clean dish instead of eating it out of the doggie dish, but don't let mother-in-law see it!

Anyway, pink slime is all the rage right now, but to what end? What will our food police find next that will increase the price of food to the consumer? Of course, if people were to eat healthy and buy fresh foods and vegetables, instead of going through the drive-through on the way home, they wouldn't have to worry about the mysterious ingredients in their food. But what's the fun in that?

It's more fun to boycott pink slime. Takes our focus off the politics for a while.
