1926-2012

Sylvester Cyril Trial entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, after a sudden illness. The seventh of nine children, he was born in Hobson, Texas, May 28, 1926, to Louis Joseph and Cecile Maurin Trial.

Sylvester married the love of his life, Mary Louise Opiela, Oct. 6, 1948. She predeceased him on Jan. 9, 2005. He left a family whom he dearly loved and a host of wonderful friends whom he acquired over his active lifetime. He was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Hobson. He will be fondly remembered and missed by family and many friends.

After having been away for 38 years, Sylvester retired to Hobson, his place of birth and childhood. Here, he shared his faith and service by his active participation in his church community. Sylvester had served as president on the pastoral council and finance committees; as teacher and director of the religious education program; and as a member of the San Antonio Archdiocesan Pastoral Council. He served the church as Extraordinary Lay Minister of the Holy Eucharist, as lector and as collection tabulator. Sylvester was instrumental in inaugurating a decade of renovation to the parish church and facilities and was administrator of the Hobson Catholic Cemetery Association for more than a decade.

He was a member of the Third Degree Knights of Columbus, Past Faithful Navigator of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, and a past member of the Order of the Alhambra.

Sylvester graduated from Karnes City High School and served his country in World War II, having served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater of War. He received his Bachelor of Science with honors in industrial engineering from St. Mary’s University by taking a full curriculum while working full time in the San Antonio Post Office. During this time, he and Mary Louise were rearing a family of five children. On April 15, 1961, she presented him with their sixth child, in time for his graduation on May 28, 1961, which incidentally was also Sylvester’s 35th birthday. He was employed as a supervisor in the San Antonio Post Office for 10 years; by Texas Instruments Dallas as a manufacturing engineer for three years; and by B.D. Holt Co. & Affiliates in various executive positions for 24 years before retiring to his ranch in Hobson. Here, he enjoyed the serenity, solitude, and beauty of nature around him and where he resided at the time of his passing.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mary Louise Trial; his parents; his brothers, Felix, Regis, Hubert, and Gerald Trial: and his sisters, Cecile Kutach and Magdalen Bludeau Harlos.

Sylvester and Mary Louise were the proud parents of six beautiful children, all of whom survive them, Kathleen Denise Kostas and husband Stephen of Rochester Hills, Mich., Cheryl Ann Trial of Rochester Hills, Mich., Kenneth Charles Trial and wife Debra of Corpus Christi, Bobbie Jean Sturm and husband Raymond of Austin, Richard Mark Trial of Kenedy, and Thomas Michael Trial and wife Sharon of Lake Conroe. He is also survived by his brothers, Maurice Trial of San Antonio and Gregory Trial and wife Dixie of Newark, Ohio; and his sister-in-law, Theresa Hahn Trial. Sylvester leaves behind 11 grandchildren, Heather Rogers Sanko and husband Ken, Ryan Love and wife Stacy, Brandon Love and wife Annita, Rhiana Trial Masek and husband Jason, Austin Trial and wife Sheena, Shaina Trial Ahmadi and husband Jahan, Robin Sturm Hogan and husband Mike, Julie Sturm, David Sturm and wife Carolyn, Brianne Trial Benton and husband Lee, and Cameron Trial. He also leaves his great-grandchildren, Gavin and Aidan Love, Matthew, Jacob, and Joshua Love, and Walter James Hogan; and his great-granddaughter, Skylar Fitzgerald.

Visitation was held Friday, March 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Hobson, with a rosary at 8:15 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in the church with the Rev. Gregory Sawicki officiating.

Interment followed in the St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Hobson.

The grandchildren served as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hobson Catholic Cemetery Association or the St. Boniface Catholic Church Building Fund, 358 C.R. 220, Hobson, TX 78117; or by way of Mass cards.
