Leandro ‘Rooster’ Herrera Jr.
Leandro “Rooster” Herrera Jr. passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, March 19, 2012, at 10:55 a.m. in the Christus Sister Mary Hospice Center in San Antonio at the age of 46 years, 2 months, and 10 days. “Rooster,” as he was affectionately called by those who knew him, was born in Floresville Jan. 9, 1966, to Eudelia and Leandro Herrera Sr.
Rooster grew up and attended school in Floresville. He went on to do what he loved, carpentry. He was born with it. There was no job too big or too small that Rooster couldn’t do. He was always ready to work when someone needed his help. Rooster’s second passion was one that he shared with his father, Leonardo Sr., and his brother, Lorenzo. The three of them loved to fish. No matter the time of day or the weather, they were sure to have their baited rods in the water waiting for a bite. The best part about their fishing was the part that everyone benefited from, that was the awesome backyard fish fries that they always had after a good day of fishing.
Rooster’s main love was shared not only with his family, but also with his “Babe,” Sandra. Rooster and Sandra shared such a special love till the end. Together they spent many years. They enjoyed visiting with family both near and far and loved every minute of their travel. They even worked part time together at the White House Café in Floresville. Rooster was the cook and Sandra was a waitress -- what a life they shared. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Knights of Columbus in Floresville, where he served not only his community, but God. Having God in his life was the one thing Rooster didn’t have a problem sharing with others. He made his first ACTS retreat shortly more than a year ago, and his life was forever changed. One thing he was most looking forward to was serving on the team for the next Men’s ACTS Retreat in April.
Rooster’s favorite team without question was the Pittsburgh Steelers. He might have been one of Floresville’s biggest and loudest Steelers fans. Rooster’s smile, laugh, and heart of gold will be missed by all, said his family.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents; his maternal grandfather; and his grandson, Juan Isaiah.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his parents; his wife, Sandra Salas; his grandmother, Maggie Cruz; his daughters, Diandra Escamilla and Angel Rios; his stepchildren, Jaclyn Talamantez and Richard “Trey” Talamantez III; his brother, Lorenzo Herrera and wife Bernadette; his nephew, Lorenzo Herrera Jr., and his niece, Britney Herrera; and his grandkids, Hevin and Sebastian Rivera. He also leaves behind many cousins, whom he considered his nieces and nephews, along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Visitation was held Wednesday, March 21, at 6 p.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville, followed by a rosary at 7 p.m.
Mass was celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday in the church with the Rev. Phil Henning officiating.
Interment followed in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Floresville, Texas.
Pallbearers were Richard Talamantez III, Lorenzo Herrera Jr., Ruben Rodriguez, George Silva Jr., Daniel Martinez Jr., and Rudy Mendoza.
