Forgery suspect waives jury
Toni Lee Hanley, 50, of Matagorda is set to enter pleas May 22 in Wilson County District Court related to two indictments charging her with forgery, according to court records. This was after Hanley, during a March 20 pretrial hearing, waived her right to a trial by jury.
Hanley is charged with attempting to cash four separate checks at H-E-B supermarkets in Floresville and La Vernia on Nov. 28 and Dec. 4, respectively. The checks all belonged to the same victim. If convicted, she faces up to two years in a state jail and a fine of up to $10,000, for each count.
Jon Mykel Morales, 35, of San Antonio, Hanley’s alleged accomplice, also was in court for a pretrial hearing March 20. He is charged with attempting to cash four separate checks in the Floresville and La Vernia H-E-B stores on Nov. 21 and Dec. 4, respectively.
Morales is set to return to court March 27 for a docket call, with jury selection in his trial set to begin April 9. Because he has two prior felony convictions, Morales faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 on each of the two counts, if convicted.
Also making its way through the Wilson County District Court is the case of 50-year-old Steven Edward Cole. He is charged with five counts of aggravated assault against a public servant, for his alleged role in a Jan. 15, 2011, shootout with law-enforcement personnel at his home north of Floresville. Court records indicate that a psychiatric evaluation for Cole is pending and that his next court appearance is a docket call set for April 18. Jury selection in his trial is set for April 30. Cole faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 per count, if convicted.
Another defendant in court March 22 was Marco Morales, 26, of Stockdale, who was set to enter a plea in response to his charge of intoxication manslaughter. The charge stems from his alleged role in a Nov. 29, 2010, crash on F.M. 1681 near the Guadalupe County line, which killed one of his passengers, 34-year-old Luke Gonzales of Stockdale.
Court records indicate that Morales’ attorney was not present, resulting in his entrance of a plea being rescheduled to April 18. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
