POTH -- After picking up another pair of district wins over Three Rivers and Cotulla last week, the Poth Pirate baseball team improves its league record to 6-0, and has emerged as the team to beat in District 30-2A.

The Pirates earned their first of the six wins with a 9-5 victory over Karnes City. The team then took the field against Natalia, and picked up its second win with a 9-3 effort in adverse weather.

District wins three and four came along with Poth’s dominating performances over Dilley and Jourdanton. A 7-run seventh inning lifted the Pirates over the Wolves, while the Indians never stood a chance in their 11-0 5-inning loss to the Pirates. Senior Braden Lyssy earned both wins pitching for Poth, and a number of players made highlights during the games.

Nick Sifuentez led Poth over Dilley as he went 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs, Tyler Kallies and Dillon Zaiontz also went 2 for 3, and each had a double in the contest. Kallies drove in 2 runs, and Zaiontz brought in another. Zach Lyssy was 2 for 5 with an RBI, and also swiped two bases for Poth. Braden Lyssy struck out 14 batters in the game.

Braden Lyssy added seven strikeouts to his total against Jourdanton, and also went 3 for 4 at the plate and drove in 2 runs. Zach Lyssy was 2 for 3 in the game, stealing three bases and scoring twice for the Pirates. Kallies was 1 for 1 with two walks and two RBIs.

Last week, Poth made a couple of road trips to earn victories five and six. The first stop was Three Rivers, where the Pirates made quick work of the Bulldogs in a 17-2 pounding. A trip to Cotulla last Friday meant district win No. 6, as Poth returned home with a 7-3 victory.

The Pirates will continue their quest for a district title and trip into the postseason, with games scheduled this week against George West and Karnes City. The Pirates were to host the Longhorns March 27, and will play their rematch with the Badgers this Friday, March 30.
