POTH -- It wasn’t quite the start to the season they had hoped for, and after going 3-8 through its non-district schedule, the Poth Pirette softball team now appears to be on track, and has blown by its first three district opponents.

Poth gave up some big losses to several teams in February, including La Vernia, El Paso Riverside, Antonian, and Blanco, but the month of March has been better for the Pirettes, and they have really turned things around. Poth closed out its non-district schedule with a big 18-4 win over Granger, and then began its District 29-2A schedule with a healthy 17-2 win over Brooks Academy.

The Pirettes took just four innings to shut down the Lady Bengals, as Ryann Boening pitched the entire game. Boening also helped herself at the plate, going 3 for 3 with one walk, one steal, 3 RBIs, and having scored three times herself. Katy Macias and Lauren Pape each went 3 for 3 as well. Macias drove in 3 runs and scored once, while Pape scored twice. Other big contributions came from Shelby Yanta, Heather Rocha, Kelsey Garcia, and Morgan Urbanczyk.

Poth was scheduled to face Stockdale on March 20, but severe weather the night before took its toll on both schools’ fields. The game was played the following evening, though, and the Pirettes picked up a 12-2 win in five innings. Poth took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Stockdale came back to earn 1 run in the bottom of the first. The Pirettes added 1 run in the third to make it a 3-1 game, and then blew things open in the fourth with a 6-run inning to take a 9-1 lead. Poth added 3 additional runs in the top of the fifth. While Stockdale was able to score 1 run in the bottom of the inning, it wasn’t enough to keep the game going, as officials called it due to the 10-run rule.

Poth traveled to Luling last Friday, and returned home with a 19-8 win, and a perfect 3-0 record in district play. Boening went 3 for 3 from the plate, stole a base, and drew two walks. Garcia was 3 for 4, had a double, scored 3 runs, and drove in another 3 RBIs. She also had a stolen base. Macias had a good game, too, going 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs, 2 runs, and two stolen bases.

The Pirettes were scheduled to host Marion March 27, and will welcome the Lady Mustangs of Nixon-Smiley this Friday, March 30. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
