Floresville Tigers end season at regional powerlifting meet
BISHOP -- After a strong season of powerlifting, the Floresville Tigers sent three athletes to Bishop High School to compete in the Region IV powerlifting meet. Representing Floresville were Johnathan Saldana, Mark Livesay, and Able Ingle.
Saldana, a state qualifier last year, has been the leader of the team throughout the season. He competes in the super heavyweight class, and was expected to make a return trip to the state meet this year.
Saldana made a great effort at the regional meet, and had a three-lift total of 1,720 pounds. His bench press of 385, deadlift of 615, and incredible squat of 720 pounds would have been the best total going into the state meet, but he was disqualified on his last deadlift attempt when one of the officials made a judgment call. Saldana had easily qualified for the state meet when the disaster occurred.
Livesay made a good effort and finished in ninth place in his weight class with a three-lift total of 775 pounds. He had a bench press of 145 pounds, a squat of 305, and managed a deadlift of 325 pounds.
Ingle had troubles during his competition. While he powered up 240 pounds on the bench and 400 pounds on the squat rack, he “bombed out” in the deadlift with no weight.
While the results were less than they had hoped for at the regional meet, the Tigers can still be happy with the season they had.
“This was the most lifters to ever qualify for regionals from Floresville,” said Head Coach Jason Pfluger. “I am very proud of the entire team throughout the year and look forward to bigger and better things next year, even though we have very big shoes to fill with the graduation of our one senior -- Johnathan Saldana. In my eyes, he is still a state champion.”
