FLORESVILLE -- After finishing their district schedule with a 0-10 record one year ago, the Floresville Tiger soccer team made a dramatic turnaround this season, finishing the regular season in second place with a District 57-4A record of 8-2. In doing so, the team has qualified for the playoffs for the first time in school history.

The Tigers began the season with a 3-2 win over Burbank, but then dropped several games in a row to Holy Cross, Medina Valley, Southwest, Alamo Heights, and Wimberley. The Tigers got back on track with a game win in the East Central tournament, and then played to a 3-3 tie against Memorial. Floresville finished its non-district schedule with a 2-1 win over Canyon Lake.

The Tigers opened their district season with a 4-1 win over Beeville, but then fell to Harlandale, the eventual district champs. The Tigers went on a four-game winning streak from there, knocking off Southside, 7-1; Pleasanton, 7-0; McCollum, 3-0; and Beeville, 1-0.

Floresville suffered its second district loss to Harlandale by the score of 2-0, then went on to beat Southside and Pleasanton again. The Tigers played their final district game last Friday against McCollum, and the Tigers earned a 4-0 victory.

Floresville Head Coach Robert Trevino said the Tigers’ success this year has been spearheaded by Godswill Orzabal, who leads the Tigers with 15 goals and four assists. Eli Sanchez has 9 goals for Floresville this year, and Heriberto Briones has another 7.

“We are also being led by a very experienced defensive group including Richard Marrero, Joseph Martinez, Rafael Arellano, and Gerardo Alvarado,” Trevino said. “We are also led by Esteban Mireles and his excellent keeper skills, averaging only 0.75 goals per game.”
