The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo brings great rewards for East Central FFA members.
By the time the dust settled, one student earned a couple of belt buckles in the skill-a-thon competition, three other students earned scholarships, and the ag mechanics teams
earned honors as well.
During the first week of this year’s show, held in early February, several students were active showing their breeding stock.
Amy Beth Moran took home three places -- second, fifth, and sixth -- in the breeding goat competition.
During the breeding gilt competition, the following FFA members competed in different swine breed divisions:
•Dustin Holloway, fourth and seventh, Yorkshire; and sixth, Hampshire.
•Ty Baird, fourth and seventh place, Yorkshire. These gilts were selected from Ty’s herd.
•Trent Stolowski, ninth, Chester White.
•Koy Diechow, eighth, Chester White.
•Logan Taylor, seventh, Yorkshire.
•Krystal Zigmond, 11th, Spotted Poland China.
During the Swine Skill-A-Thon competition, Katie Kempen captured third-place honors in the Junior Division, while Kylie Patterson was named Champion Intermediate winner, earning Kylie a prestigious San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo belt buckle.
Kylie continued her winning streak by receiving Champion honors during the Beef Skill-A-Thon and a second San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo belt buckle.
Katie also placed fourth in the Beef Skill-A-Thon for the Junior Division. Johnna Pieniazek rounded out the skill-a-thon/biathlon competitions by earning fourth-place honors.
During the Limousin show, Stephanie Geistweidt’s heifer earned seventh place and Kylie Patterson’s Brahman heifer was named reserve division champion after placing first in her class.
During the first weekend of competition, several judging teams competed.
The poultry judging and meats judging teams each earned fifth place.
The wool team placed 14th, with Diamond Mouton Bell earning third-place overall individually.
However, it was Kyle Brown who took home the $10,000 scholarship in the poultry judging event that excited the locals at the stock show.
Lindsay Hamer continued the scholarship tradition and earned a scholarship in the AgriScience Fair competition with her project titled, “Great Barns of Fire.”
During market week at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, the East Central FFA members found more success that carried them into the auction ring.
During the barrow show, Amber Kerns’ barrow placed fourth and Christi Schick’s barrow, second. Trent Stolowski’s Chester White barrow earned seventh place, while Jace Freeman’s crossbred barrow won eighth-place honors.
“This was a great way for these two seniors [Amber and Christi] to conclude their San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo show career,” said Ray Pieniazek, East Central FFA advisor.
Exhibitors in the broiler show included Johnna Pieniazek, 13th; Taylor Luensmann, 16th; Tiffany Ott, 23rd; and Sierra Gutierrez, 30th.
During the market turkey show, Jordan Hevner placed seventh to earn a position in the sale ring. Other members competing were Kristen Sendemer, 17th; and Ty Birdsong, 34th. Aaron Maron placed fourth with his turkey tom entry.
East Central exhibitors won two-three-four in the market steer show, in different classes.
Local student Dalton Zigmond received a second place with his ABC steer and won an $8,000 scholarship.
Both Jordan Hevner and Katie Kempen earned third place with their Santa Gertrudis and Brahman steers, respectively.
Rounding out the top four was Crystalyn Bettice, who received a fourth place with her AOB steer.
The East Central FFA had two ag mechanics projects that won honors.
In the livestock equipment class, the ag mechanics team of Jake Allen, Gerald Ramzinski, Colton Zizelman, Kyle Brown, and Jay Thomas earned a first place in class and fourth place in the livestock division. This group earned about $2,800 worth of equipment.
The ag mechanics team of Hunter Shadrock and Russell Brown earned a third place in the hay equipment class.
