Juanita Wiseman Grubbs, 93, of La Vernia, Texas, passed away Sunday, April 1, 2012, in La Vernia. Juanita died about two miles from where she was born Feb. 22, 1919, the daughter of Walter Marcellus “Cell” Wiseman and Agnes Brown.

On June 8, 1957, Juanita married William “Bill” Grubbs in San Antonio. Having taught school for more than 36 years, Juanita began her teaching career at Culebra Elementary in San Antonio. She later taught at the Concrete Elementary School, and in the La Vernia, San Antonio, Harlandale, and Abilene independent school districts. Juanita also taught in Morocco and Germany.

She was a past matron and secretary of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Wilson County Retired Teachers, where she served as president and secretary. Juanita also was a member of the La Vernia United Methodist Church since 1929, having served there as a secretary, Sunday school teacher, and historian for many years; and was a member of the Concrete Cemetery Association.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Walter, Maurice “Cotton,” and Ed Wiseman; and her great-grandson, Joshua England.

Juanita is survived by her son, Gary Shank and wife Martha; her granddaughters, Deanna England and husband Brian, Amanda Hirshon and husband Jonathan, and Melanie Shank; her great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Kyle England; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visitation was held Tuesday, April 3, from 5-8 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in La Vernia.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Steve Purdy officiating.
