Ronald Lynn Edwards began his final journey to meet with friends and family members that preceded him in death on Saturday morning, March 24, 2012, at the age of 68 years, 7 months, and 28 days. He was born in Del Rio, Texas, on July 25, 1943, to Alvin W. and Martha Ovette Watkins Edwards.

Ronald was born the second-youngest of 10 children. He grew up in a very loving and caring family with great values that he himself passed on to others throughout his life. After graduating from school at Del Rio High, he began his career working at Laughlin Air Force Base in Texas as a clerk typist. After a short period of time, he moved to San Antonio and began working in the induction center for personnel entering the military service for the Vietnam War. He soon found out that eventually everyone’s number comes up, and he himself was drafted into the U.S. Army. Ron spent a tour in Vietnam and came home with several decorations. He was discharged, and continued his civil service career. Ron’s career and job led him to several locations throughout the United States. He retired from civil service and returned to his paradise on earth here in Floresville. However, after only a short period of time, he was hired as a contractor/consultant for the J.M. Waller Company in Burke, Va. He was able to maintain his residence in Floresville. After several years with the company, he completely retired, and was able to spend full time at his residence. His retirement was brief, but truly fulfilling.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Janette and Jewell; and his brothers, Raymon, Bill, and Charles.

He is survived by his sisters, Janelle and Barbara Copple and husband William; his brothers, John Edwards and Dennis Edwards; and several nieces and nephews. He is additionally survived by his longtime friend and companion, Jake Weller, and Jake’s grandson, William Weller.

A viewing was held in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville on Tuesday, March 27, from 3-8 p.m.

There was no funeral service, as Ron’s desire was to be cremated. His remains will be interred at Mission Park South in San Antonio.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice, the Wounded Warriors Fund, or to any organization for the blind.
